Alternanthera denticulata / Lesser Joyweed

This relatively weak creeper is surrounded by vigorously growing Persicaria strigosa and Typha orientalis which can both be seen in the background. Its roots are growing in water or damp soil and the plant struggles up through the ground level canopy to reach the light. The photo shows the papery bracts – left after the flowers die off – enclosing the seeds. Created: 03/2/2009
