Tufted perennial with very short rhizome. Seed stems are rigid – erect – flat to slightly convex – smooth and shiny – 30–100 cm high – and about 3–8 mm wide; margins usually rough to touch. Leaves are similar – 3–8 mm wide but much shorter than the stems; sheath reddish or dark grey-brown at base – straw-coloured at apex – rarely all straw-coloured – Flowers produce a nut about 3–04) mm long – 1.3–2.0 mm diam. – pale to dark brown – wrinkled to smooth – shining.
